I grew up
on a farm in Hancock County. My family farmed mostly but didn't rest
much. When the day was done, we also logged and hauled coal.
On top of all of that, my dad's passion was homebuilding. We dug
footers by pick and shovel and mixed concrete and mortar by hand.
Hard work is no stranger to me.
My father's passion was not always
mine. I believe that deep down, my father was trying to inspire me
to keep working hard and continue my education so that I could do
something other than homebuilding. I went off to college and found
out early that I needed more money than anticipate. I found a job
doing something that I knew, construction. My studies included
engineering and drafting courses and before long, I was drawing house
plans. So much for getting out of the homebuilding business.
After two years in the Army, I returned to school and finished my
engineering degree so I could again pry myself away from the homebuilding
business.
It didn't take long before
homebuilding found me again. Schubert Lumber was my first job and
not long after that, I became one of the youngest builders in the Home
Builders Association of Greater Knoxville. Thirty years later, I now
serve as the organization's Past President. I have realized that
homebuilding has always been my passion and I am proud to be a
homebuilder.
